A real challenge for entrepreneurs and business leaders is balancing the moving parts. There might be a company that focuses on profits, but they don't do so well around customers. Companies may also be so focused on growth or cash that they run into trouble.
South West is a perfect example of a successful business of a new company that is thriving in a suffering market. Why is it that they never had a loss or layoff in their four years of business when most airlines suffer? Kevin Cope believes they combine all the positives of successful business starting with great employee loyalty to cash management.
Another example of a business understands "The Big Picture" according to Kevin Cope is Zappos. Zappos is based in Las Vegas and they sell shoes over the Internet. Because of their convince (of free shipping) and good customer service they have had great growth. However, before Zappos hires anyone they look at their skills, and if they are a good fit for their culture. It is pretty rigorous to achieve an interview and then be hired. Once your hired you go through a 5-week training program everybody including the CFO. Once they finish the orientation process, they are offered $3,000 to leave the company. When people forgo the $3,000 opportunity they come back much more committed. Zappos is a company that full sees the big picture and because of it they have built success with loyal employees who are fully invested in the culture of Zappos.
In summary Kevin Cope believes that a profitable company sees "the big picture" which is "great employees connecting well with the customers."
