Ooby Dooby is a song recognized as Roy Orbison's first recorded release, although he had previously recorded it as a demo in 1955 with his band, the Wink Westerners, after Orbison had become aware of the song. Their demo was pitched to Columbia Records but it failed to lure their interest in the Wink Westimers.
In early 1956, Roy recorded the song a second time at the Norman Petty studios in Clovis, New Mexico. The Wink Westimers were renamed as The Teen Kings and the song was released by Je-wel Records as a B-side to the single 'Trying To Get To You'.
It wasn't until Orbison and the Teen Kings re-recorded the song again in 1956 at Sun Studios in Memphis that the song gained traction as an A-side, selling a quarter million copies for Sam Phillips and his Sun Records label.
Sun Records made a distribution deal with Quality Records in Canada for a number of their releases, including Ooby Dooby. There were far fewer copies of the Quality Records release than there were on the Sun label, making this record much more rare than the desired Sun Records label release.
I recorded this video of my original pressing of the Canadian Quality Records 78 RPM, Obby Dooby by Roy Orbison and The Teen Kings, playing on my turntable to share the experience of playing 78s with those who also enjoy the hobby and history of vinyl records, especially of early Blues. I do not claim or own, nor imply ownership, of the song or music recording in any way.
