Built in 1858-1869 by architects Konrad Wilhelm Gase and Edwin Oppler, representatives of the Hanoverian School of Architecture, commissioned by George V, the last king of Hanover. The monarch erected it as a gift to his wife, Queen Mary, née Princess of Saxe-Altenburg, on her birthday on April 14, 1857. The castle served as a summer residence for the kings of Hanover from the House of Welf.
"Marienburg Castle was not only a place of longing for Queen Marie of Hanover. Even today, the castle inspires with its almost original interior and its fairytale appearance. Although not inhabited for long, the queen's love for her Eldorado, as she called the castle , recognizable from every corner. The castle is open to visitors all year round. It is a museum with a shop and café, a venue and a backdrop for film productions."
