Two days ago we visited a bar in Miraflores. It's on Berlin street, a popular street with bars on it.
We hung out with friends there, then the owner of the bar drank with us at the end of the night. He accommodated us and gave us free drinks. Really nice guy. I think we left around 9:30am in the morning.
When we woke up in the afternoon, my cell phone was missing! We looked everywhere for it, then decided to go back to the bar to look there. The owner (Who we drank with) was really nice and let us check the CCTV video for the entire night. He was helping us look through all the camera footage from multiple cameras. Unfortunately, the video didn't show much other than the fact the phone was last seen before we used the bathroom
We checked the bathroom, and found the CASE for the phone in the bin, but not the phone. At least we knew it was stolen and not lost in the Uber or whatnot.
The sad thing is that the bar was closed to the public (When the phone went missing) and there were only 5 other people in total. So it felt like playing Cluedo (Professor Plum did it with the Candlestick lol)
The suspects:
1. The Turkey guy. The guy that kept invited me to eat turkey with him all damn night lol
2. A random Portuguese guy that we met that night. He represented a giant bus company. We had his business card. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy, but so did everybody.
3. The owner of the bar who accommodated us and gave us free drinks most of the night.
4. The millionnaire restauranteur. Everybody seemed to want to tell me that fact throughout the night lol
5. A mutual work friend who is a supervisor at a local bar.
Definitely the turkey guy right? or maybe the random Portuguese guy! Who knows!
We checked Find My Phone but it was turned off and the Sim Card was removed.
2 days later, the phone started tracking on Find My Phone! It was connected to a WIFI hotspot and located within a 50m radius. Looking at Google Street View, there were a few apartments above stores and one giant 8 floor apartment block in the radius.
We tried to call the phone, no answer. We emitted the loud 'Find My Phone' siren, no response. The phone had no password, so they can easily reach out on Facebook/Email/Instagram/Messenger to locate the owner if they were genuine (and not the original thief. I.e. they bought it in a pawn shop for example). Besides, they unlocked the phone in order to hook it up to their own WIFI. Big mistake!
So we took a taxi to the radius. Then I used an app called WIFI Analyzer. It's a cool App! It plots graphs of nearby WIFI signals and the graph grows as you approach the source of the WIFI signal. We narrowed the signal down to one side of the 8 floor apartment block.
We got a resident of the apartment block to let us into the building. We started on each floor and slowly moved up the floors. We found the WIFI SSID on the 6th Floor. There were only 4 apartments on this side of the 6th floor. We knocked on one of the doors where the signal was the strongest and a neighbor came out. In turns out, this neighbor had the phone!
Their body language was all wrong, even though I had no idea what they were saying (Until it was translated to me)
They said the owner of the bar gave it to him for a case of beer. Mystery solved!
But... They wanted to give the phone back to us tomorrow, in the bar. Yeah right! Because they clearly know the phone was stolen and did nothing to contact us or even answer the calls.
So we called the police and they came over and got them to give us the phone back. I took a picture of the awkward hand-off
Morale of the story? You can never truly know a person. There is always an element of trust involved on your part. It could be a newly accommodating friend, or a long-turn marriage, it doesn't matter. That doesn't always mean your guard has to be up all the time, because that is how you end up like pigeon woman from Home Alone 2, but it's perhaps a thought that shouldn't leave the back of your mind.
