Kyo Sakamoto was a huge star in his native Japan and this lovely song was a global hit.

He was tragically killed on the 12th August 1985 in a Japanese Air Lines flight, along with 519 other passengers. This made him one of the casualties of The most deadly aircraft accident in aviation history.
