In this video, we will go over many examples of u-substitution to solve definite and indefinite integrals. U Substitution is used to simplify the integrand, and it is especially useful in integration techniques. Students must master this concept early in their Calculus class, as there are more integration techniques to come such as integration by parts, partial fraction integration ,and trigonometric integrals. Here, u substitution is the easiest form: you let u equal to some expression, find the derivative of it, then substitute it back into the integral and solve.
In calculus and math in general, integration by substitution, also known as u-substitution, reverse chain rule or change of variables, is a method for evaluating integrals and antiderivatives. It is the counterpart to the chain rule for differentiation, and can loosely be thought of as using the chain rule "backwards".
