STORYLINE:
Farmers in Ukraine's Kyiv region are ending this year's harvest in uncertainty in the face of the country's conflict, with recent developments allowing some ships to transport grain in the Black Sea providing little comfort.
Oleksandr Sivogorlo, who works as the chief agronomist of one farm, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that about 3,000 tons of last year's grain and winter crops which they could not sell this season due to blocked ports continue to be buried in their warehouses.
Sivogorlo said that the situation has not improved with the first ships, because they are now exporting last year's harvest. With the rates of transport, this year's harvest won't be moved until next year.
Sivogorlo noted that a large number of farmers will not be able to sow a new crop due to lack of finances.
The agronomist himself shared that their main goal now is to survive, not to make money. He also added that the situation could lead to a shortage of bread already next year.
"At this time, the main goal is not to earn, but to survive", - said Sivogorlo.
This year, in general, they plan to collect 4.5 thousand tons of grain, which will be stored in warehouses until the export issues are resolved.
Four of the carriers cleared Sunday to leave Ukraine were transporting more than 219,000 tons of corn. The fifth was carrying more than 6,600 tons of sunflower oil and the sixth 11,000 tons of soya, the Joint Coordination Center said.
Three other cargo ships that left Friday passed their inspections and received clearance Sunday to pass through Turkey's Bosporus Strait on the way to their final destinations, the Center said.
