Naftali Bennett is the face is an emerging right in Israel that has grown frustrated with the lack of progress in a peace with the Palestinians and terror attacks. Yet, his tactics, critics argue, would only create a more volatile situation. The Minister of Education discusses with hosts Nurit Ben, Calev Ben-David and Boaz Bismuth.
Story:
Israel’s Education Minister and co-leader of the religious Zionist New Right party, Naftali Bennett, told i24NEWS on Monday night in an exclusive interview that he will take care of Hamas as defense minister, unlike the Blue & White alliance whose ex-generals were responsible for past mistakes in Gaza.
'We will need about 10 seats in order for me to become defense minister and take care of Hamas because we cannot continue this crazy situation where a terror organization controls Israel,' Bennett told i24NEWS.
Bennett has slammed what he views as Israel’s 'failed' defense policy in the Gaza Strip, accusing Netanyahu’s government of accommodating terrorist entities instead of protecting Israelis living in the south.
However, the only person qualified to lead Israel in the next government is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Bennett stated.
'The elections are not about not about who is going to be prime minister. Netanyahu will. The only question is who he will partner with,' Bennett said.
The Education Minister also lashed out at Blue & White’s three former IDF chiefs of staff, saying they bungled operations in Gaza during their respective tenures in defense leadership.
'These generals have failed, factually. It was Benny Gantz as chief of staff. It was (Moshe) Ya’alon as defense minister four years ago in Gaza,' Bennett added.
Though the New Right party leader said a government led by Gantz would be an “unmitigated disaster.” he fell short of rejecting to sit with Blue & White in coalition.
'I’m not boycotting Benny Gantz in a government under Netanyahu,' Bennett said.
Last week, Bennett charged in a letter to Attorney General Mandelblit that Netanyahu (who currently serves as both Israel’s prime minister and defense minister) has been 'excluding' ministers from decisions regarding the volatile situation on the Gaza border.
Bennett reiterated his harsh criticism of the Israeli government’s handling of Hamas on Monday, saying they are not deterred.
The term 'deterrence doctrine' is outdated, Bennett said, vowing to introduce a new 'thesis' behind Israeli security policy beginning with 'neutralizing' and followed up by 'lawn mowing,' which Bennett explained as actively neutralizing Hamas and making sure that each new attempt to re-arm would be met with immediate response from the Israeli Defense Forces.
Bennett also hailed US President Donald Trump as a 'huge friend of Israel,' but said that he would do 'everything in my power' to stop the establishment of a Palestinian state, even if it’s part of the long awaited US peace plan.
