At 1:43 a.m., August 6, 1997, I was awoken from my sleep by a phone call from my military dispatcher, alerting me an airliner had crashed into military housing just outside our base. I rushed to the accident scene to find several Guam PD and military police officers attempting to break down a gate to an access road by housing, so we could reach the crash scene. The hillside was in flames as the fuselage was strewn about the mountainside. Over the next several hours, numerous acts of courage and heroism were exhibited by all the first reposnders, as they rescued those who had survived the crash, and then that morning, secured the mishap crash site to await the NTSB. I will never forget that night, or the weeks that followed, as we processed the crash site of this terrible disaster. 229 of the 254 passengers would perish in this airline disaster.
