Tech Tip Tuesday: Pearl Drums 12” x 7” 8-ply Maple VS. Williams Drum Co. 12” x 7” Acacia stave. What’s the difference?

I’m aware that these are two very different drums with a lot of unique features.

This is why I enjoy doing comparisons like this. It reveals how different companies create the same product, while utilizing different methods and craftsmanship.

As always I tuned these drums by ear & checked my tunings with the Tama Tension Watch. (85 batter / 90 resonant)

These are my findings after looking over these two drums:

- The Pearl is a 8-ply maple shell & the Williams is a 7/16” thick Acacia stave shell.
- The Pearl has 1.6mm counter hoops & the Williams has 2.3mm counter hoops.
- The Pearl had 8 Chrome plated CL100 Bridge Lugs & the Williams has 8 Chrome plated traditional tube lugs.
- The Pearl has a SR018 Strainer & matching butt plate and the Williams has INDe universal Throw-off & Butt Plate.
- The Pearl has a Remo Ambassador coated batter (10mil (1-ply)) while the Williams has a Remo Controlled Sound coated batter (1-ply (10mil), 5mm Black Dot))
- The Pearl has Round 45° bearing edges & the Williams has hand made roundover outer/45°inner edges.
- The Pearl has a high gloss #114 Liquid Amber Finish & the Williams has a Distressed Matte Poly finish.
- The Janka hardness rating for Maple (Pearl) is around 1,450 & the Janka hardness rating for Acacia (Williams) is around 2300.
- The Pearl has a 20 strand Puresound Wires & the Williams has 20 strand German steel wires.
- Both have an Remo Ambassador snare side heads

Even with all their differences they both sound similar tonally in comparison. In the end, both are great unique options to take out on the road or in the studio.
