Session 2: Museum data, access and metadata
SunoikisisDC Digital Approaches to Cultural Heritage, Spring 2022
Thursday January 20, 2022, starting at 16:15 GMT = 17:15 CET (for 90 minutes)
Convenors: Paula Granados García (British Museum), Susanne Töpfer (Museo Egizio Torino)
This session considers the use of data about objects and other museum holdings and collections. What data are needed in a museum record? Who are the audience and stakeholders of particular types of data? What is the distinction between data and metadata (data that provides information about other data), and does this depend on the focus of the record? What date should be accessible, highlighted, foregrounded or concealed in certain contexts? We discuss these questions in the context of the papyrus collection of the Turin Egyptian Museum and the Endangered Material Knowledge Project based at the British Museum. We will propose an exercise involving the creation and documentation of data and metadata relating to a small pilot virtual collection.
