Dr. Carl Sagan predicted that up to 10,000 advanced extraterrestrial civilizations inhabit our galaxy. Dr. Beatriz Villarroel explains how the VASCO and EXOPROBE projects hope to find them.
The Vanishing & Appearing Sources during a Century of Observations (VASCO) project undertakes a data heavy mission in searches for vanishing objects and other anomalies in the sky by comparing historical sky surveys with modern data. The goal is to find unusual astrophysical phenomena and also identify the most interesting candidates in Searches for Extra-terrestrial Intelligence. This is done via a citizen science project as well as automated searches.
Dr. Beatriz Villarroel is an astronomer at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics in Stockholm.
Dr. Villarroel has a Masters in Physics and PhD in Astronomy from Uppsala University, along with numerous professional awards and honors, and a collection peer-review papers in prestigious journals including The Astronomical Journal, Astrophysical Journal, Nature Physics, Acta Astronautica, and Nature Journal.
Dr. Villarroel is also the project leader of the Vanishing & Appearing Sources during a Century of Observations (VASCO) project, along with the founded EXOPROBE project, aiming to find an extraterrestrial probe in the Solar System.
