"Empire of the Steppes: A History of Central Asia" has long been regarded as one of the key works on early scholarship concerning Central Asia, or Inner Asia, as it's sometimes' known. What Grousset attempted to do was write a single narrative history of the region, a task which performed admirably. And, while modern scholarship has made leaps and bounds in terms of knowledge, it is still excellent historiographical reading.
