Philippians 3:13-14 teaches us that, as Christians, we must let go of our past—whether it’s failures, sins, successes, or even religious accomplishments—and continuously focus forward toward God’s Kingdom and eternal life. The Apostle Paul wrote this verse in a letter to the Philippians, encouraging fellow believers to do the same as he reflected on his own spiritual journey. Before becoming a follower of Christ, Paul—then known as Saul—was a highly respected Pharisee who actively persecuted early Christians, seeing them as a threat to the Jewish religious law. However, Paul did not let his past define or hinder his work for God through Jesus Christ. Instead, he pressed forward with relentless focus, dedicating his life to spreading the gospel, mentoring new believers, and planting churches. As a result of his determination, Paul’s letters now make up a significant portion of the New Testament. Like Paul, we too must not allow guilt or shame from past failures and sins, or pride from past successes, to prevent us from fully embracing God’s calling on our lives. Once we come to God in repentance, He forgives our sins and remembers them no more (Hebrews 8:12). Our focus must remain steadfast on the goal: eternal life in Heaven and fulfilling God’s purpose here on earth. We must keep pressing forward with our eyes fixed on the prize.
Reflection: What past experiences are you holding onto that may be hindering your spiritual growth? How can you "forget what is behind" and focus on pressing forward in your faith?
