The Tour Down Under started the 2014 World Tour season. The first stage came down to a sprint between Simon Gerrans (ORICA-GreenEDGE) and Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) after the bunch sprinters were able to hold on up the only climb of the day. With time bonuses often deciding the winner of the TDU, expect the overall to be a close-run thing. It's pretty sunny in Adelaide too (not that Daniel mentions it), so expect the heat to be a factor for the European riders.
The wildcard teams for the 2014 Giro d'Italia have been announced. Team Yellow Fluo, who raced last year as Vini Fantini, have controversially been invited, even after two of their riders tested positive during the 2013 Giro.
In tech news, Team Sky have made the switch from SRM to Stages powermeters. Stages powermeters measure the power through the left crank and then double it for total power - a measure that they state is adequately accurate.
Doping news continues. Alessandro Ballan has been fired by Team BMC after receiving a two-year ban from CONI for offences dating back to 2009.
As usual, we've got news from the GCN Strava club ([ Ссылка ]) and Tweet of the Week.
