Every once in a while you’ll see filmmakers use in-camera lighting transitions as a creative way of transitioning from scene to scene. One way this is often accomplished is when shooting night-to-day transitions. This occurs a character is asleep at night -- and in a single shot -- the sun comes up and it becomes morning. Obviously, this is a stylistic choice as it signifies an unrealistic passage of time, but it can be more interesting than a straight cut. Today on 4 Minute Film School, we are going to look at how to create a lighting transition in a shot, and what you’ll need to think about when lighting it.
In this video, Matt from the A-Team shoots two versions of a night to day transition. First, he places the camera and actor and makes sure that he has complete control over the lighting in the set. This will help his lighting setups look their best. Next, he sets up the lighting for the two looks. In this case, the nighttime and the daytime lighting. Lastly he decides how he’s going to transition from one lighting setup to the other.
The main aspects addressed in this video are believability and dimming. The believability refers to how realistic the two lighting setups look. Try your best to make each one realistic enough that it could work on its own -- without the transition. Dimming refers to the light fixtures’ ability to change brightness or color. Using lights that have one or both of these features will make the transition easier to pull off.
Of course, this technique won’t work in every situation; but it can be used to add some interest to your shot selection. Afterall, there are some things that you can only do in a video, and using those to your advantage can make for exciting projects. Try to think of other lighting transitions or effects that you can pull off in order to make your projects unique and visually captivating.
