Continuing with ATP/CTP FSTD 3, we get to see some wind shear on take off and the Airbus's reactive wind shear warning system. Normally the gear is not retracted on take off when encountering and then performing the wind shear escape maneuver, due to the increased drag that the gear doors create opening and closing while the landing gear is cycling to the up position. This would create even more drag than just the landing gear being down, so we typically do not make configuration changes when in wind shear. In both of these wind shear scenarios, I had the wind shear trigger at a little higher than normal take off altitude, so the students were able to get the gear up before the wind shear event .
