On August 17, 1943, the Allied conquest of Sicily was completed as U.S. and British forces entered Messina.
Out aircraft continued to strafe Messina and the Straits as the Eighth Army continued to move up. The Americans were actually the first into Messina and found many civilians in the now famous "tunnel" shelter.
