India calls the Chinese bluff
The death of 20 Indian soldiers at the icy heights of Galwan in Ladakh on the intervening night of Monday, has sent a sense of shock and disbelief among many of us. The martyrdom of the Commanding Officer of the 16 Bihar regiment and his men has brought to the fore the fact that Chinese can be brutal despite all the talks of pullback and settling the issue along the Line of Actual Control.
While the Chinese are expected to boast that they killed 20 Indian soldiers, it also highlights the fact that the Communist Party leadership does not account for the number of PLA soldiers. For those who understand how the Chinese ecosystem works, this is not surprising. When it came to the number of deaths in Wuhan and other Chinese cities, the numbers were fudged, to say the least. The Indian Army spotters counted 43 Chinese soldiers who lost their lives going by the helicopters who picked up the dead bodies.
It was the first death in 50 years in LAC. The main reason for the present standoff is the 323 km Durbuk – Shok - Daulat Beg Old (DSBDO) road that starts from the Hemes Monastery and goes along Durbuk to Daulat Beg Oldi. This road has been under construction from the last 15 years and after the Modi Sarkar took over in 2014, this strategic road was put on a fast track. Dault Beg Oldi is an extremely strategic and it took the Indian Army several days to reach this point and the road would make it easy to move men and material. This road built by the Border Roads Organization was inaugurated last year so as to reach what is called Sub Sector North.
At the heart of the dispute is also the LAC, which the Chinese have their own map and Indian have their own. But where the clash happened on Monday night, there was no such confusion – Shok or River of Death.
Patrolling Point 14 is where the clash took place along the ridge that runs along the point where Galwan and Shok rivers meet. The Indian Army countered the Chinese by increasing their patrols by the Indo – Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) along the ridge line across the Shyok river to the LAC. India started its beefing infantry - 6th June – disengage – Chinese will move back.
But the Chinese brought in more men and armour and wanted to dominate the DSBDO road from the top of the ridge. This is exactly the Pakistanis did during the Kargil war when they occupied the higher ridges and wanted to cut off the highway connecting Srinagar with Leh, thereby cutting off Ladakh and Siachen.
Basically, Chinese are upset that the Narendra Modi govt is going aggressive building strategic roads in Arunachal and Ladakh. The Chinese have been aggressive with their infrastructure development from the last two decades along their border with India, including a road close to the major PLA base near the Galwan river.
A total of 61 strategic roads are being built and most of these roads have remained on paper from the last 25 years, with successive governments were scared of the Chinese response. This is not going to end here and the Chinese are upset with a government in Delhi, which does not bend to their diktats.
