KCR relents, lets workers return to RTC fold
HYDERABAD: Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday announced that all 48,000 road transportation corporation employees, who had been on strike for more than 50 days, could join duty from Friday morning.
This has brought the curtains down on the Telangana State Road Corporation (TSRTC) row which kept the state on the boil for almost two months.
After maintaining silence all through the strike, KCR finally spoke on the issue to reporters after a cabinet meeting on Thursday evening. He said that the government would not put any conditions on employees joining back. The government will also not pursue the case on legality of the strike in the labour court.
He, however, said that his government would not deal with unions and held them responsible for the sufferings of the employees, including a string of the duration of the strike. He announced that a family member of each of the employees who rtc during the strike would be given a suitable job either in RTC or another corporation.
Since RTC had just Rs 13 crore in its coffers and was running in losses, the government would immediately infuse Rs 100 crore into it to pay salaries and meet other expenses. KCR also announced a bus fare hike of 20 paise per kilometre from December 1 and said that this would bring the corporation additional revenue of Rs 750 crore annually.
“I am like an elder brother,” the chief minister told the corporation employees. “If you listen to me, RTC will prosper. Maintain discipline and keep unions out. I will myself listen to your problems and take decisions after consulting you. In fact, if you listen to me, you may even get a bonus like workers of Singareni Colliers do.”
He said instead of unions, a group of employees from each depot would represent workers and he himself would have a meeting with them soon. This group would meet with the transport minister regularly.
According to him, only Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chouhan of the Telangana high court showed real concern for RTC workers. “When we met at Raj Bhavan recently, he suggested that something should be done for RTC employees,” he added.
KCR also gave an assurance to the temporary workers that he would use their services in the future. “You suffered insults from employees but helped the government during a period of crisis,” he told them.
