Hi, everyone, Aidan here with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Tire Chains on our 2023 Subaru Outback. Now, this is gonna be on tire size 225/60R18, so do be sure to check your tire information, plug it into our fit guide, and find the right tire chain for you, because there are multiple options for the Outback, and this chain may not fit all of them, but the installation process for the right size chain is gonna be the same. Now, with tire chains on your Subaru, there are some things we need to take note of. Subaru doesn't explicitly approve or recommend tire chains in their owner's manual, but they do say if an extra traction device is to be used, that it needs to be SAE Class S certified. And what that means is your vehicle has limited wheel well clearance, and they don't want super large tire chains sticking up and maybe making contact with suspension components or the wheel well and causing damage to your vehicle.
Luckily, these chains from pewag are going to be SAE Class S certified for that limited wheel well clearance, so there shouldn't be any issues you have to worry about. And as far as tire chains go, this is gonna be a really nice high quality option. They're self-tensioning, and what that means is you've got this mechanism right here that's actively pulling the chains tighter as we drive down the road. So if we we're to hit a bump or turn our wheels in such a way that the tire chain shifts and maybe a loose spot pokes up, this is going to actively be pulling the whole time we're driving, so if something does loosen up, this is going to be pulling things tight to make sure that that slack gets taken out and you don't have to worry about it when you're driving around. Taking a look closer at the tire chain, we can look at the link shape and the pattern of the chain.
This is going to be arranged in a diamond pattern, you can really see that shape right here on the tire. That's going to give us a much more even and consistent contact from the chain to the ground while we're driving down the road, resulting in a somewhat smoother ride quality and giving us more traction on things like turns compared to something like a ladder pattern chain, which just has sections of chain running perpendicularly across the tire. The link shape is going to be a square shape link, and that just means that the links here have hard edges, and it's going to be a little bit more high profile than something like a standard cable or a twisted link where it's less aggressive. The harder edges here will help bite into things like ice and break it up, giving us a little extra traction going down the road. These chains are gonna be built well to last multiple seasons.
The titanium alloy construction is going to be really resistant to rust and corrosion, and when you're looking at chains, if you're worried about whether or not it's going to last for many seasons, steer clear of a low-carbon steel option, because it's gonna be just a lower quality steel, more susceptible to rust and corrosion. Any sort of alloy like manganese nickel or this titanium alloy is gonna be your better bet. And some other little quality of life features about the chain that I like, everything that comes in front of or close to making contact with the rim, like these chains here or these cross sections, are gonna either be coated or have plastic covers on them, so you don't have to worry about any sort of metal contact on the rim of the vehicle causing it to scratch more easily, just keeping it more protected, and all the touchpoints that you're gonna be working with, keeps your hands less cold. The other nice thing is they come with a storage case, which is the sort of soft, hard shell material, not the most rigid thing in the world, but definitely more structured than the canvas bags that a lot of other tire chains come with. Perfectly fine room for both chains on either side, nicely divided, and it's going to give a great place to just keep these together inside your vehicle, so you have them on hand when you need them.
Now, I always recommend if you're able to, putting them on the tire before you head out, or when you get these, try them out in your garage a few times just to get the hang of installing them, so you know what to do in that emergency situation if you need to. The installation process is very strai
