We are in Manhattan's Chinatown, a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, bordering the Lower East Side to its east, Little Italy to its north, Civic Center to its south, and Tribeca to its west.
Manhattan's Chinatown is the largest Chinese-populated neighborhood in the Western Hemisphere, with a population of 100,000 and is said that started to be built as early as the 17th century. It also houses the Museum of Chinese in America.
The film opens with a shot from inside a car, as it turns from Canal Street to Mott Street, the most commercial street in the district. Mott is a narrow, one-way street, but it is very busy and gathers many shops as a pole of attraction for tourists.
The filmmaker gives us shots from the south side of the street, we can observe the crowded sidewalks with both tourists and Chinese residents of the area who wander under the shops’ bright signs.
Lastly, a young woman, who wears a red trench coat, smiles looking at the camera, while a group of Asians pass in front of her in a hurry.
