Big John McCarthy is an iconic MMA referee, assisted in creating the MMA ruleset, and was there from the very beginning.
Big John began reffing at UFC 2, but the crazy thing is he was actually going to fight in the tournament, but the Gracie’s apparently didn’t want a large jiu jitsu practitioner to fight Royce so McCarthy decided to become the referee.
And in those early days, Big John was key in legitimizing the sport, essentially writing the ruleset and creating the framework for the judging system.
And over the 24 years he reffed for the UFC, he became one of the most recognizable faces in the octagon, hardly making any mistakes and setting the standard for great officiating.
