The Gull-billed Tern is an elegant species of shorebird found all throughout the world. There are six subspecies but only two have reached New Zealand; the Australian (macrotarsa) and the common (affinis). The Australian subspecies shows up to New Zealand in very small numbers each year, so I was very lucky to see not one but three. The common species however, despite the name, is not common in New Zealand, with only 1 record.
