SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane County Sheriff's Office says a man suspected of starting a fire at 419 S. Chronicle Road in Spokane Valley has been arrested.
The Spokane Valley Fire Department says they responded to the fire just before 10 a.m. Wednesday morning. They say neighbors saw smoke coming from an unoccupied home from the street.
SCSO says neighbors also reported a man believed to be transient walking away from the home before it caught on fire. SCSO says the man was carrying a fan and blankets when walking north on Chronicle toward 4th Avenue.
SVFD says firefighters from both the SVFD and the Spokane Fire Department were dispatched to the fire, as the fire was close to the Spokane, Spokane Valley boundary.
The Spokane Fire Battalion Chief Ty Bruner confirmed to 4 News Now that the home was empty when it caught on fire and that the situation "could've been a lot worse."
The home is totally destroyed and the fire is being investigated. Battalion Chief Bruner said the wind was not a factor in this fire. He says the flames were extinguished within 30 minutes.
Spokane Valley deputies learned the suspect was walking north across the I-90 footbridge. Deputies found the man, 31-year-old Matthew M. Jones, near Sprague Avenue and Custer Road.
Jones was booked into the Spokane County Jail for second-degree arson, residential burglary and an unrelated misdemeanor warrant.
