Description:
The 1920's saw bold innovations in aeronautics. The Italians perfected their semi-rigid airships, exploring the Artic. The British sought to build an "Empire of the Air", by starting their own fleet. The Germans rose from the ashes of World War I with the most successful airship ever built: The LZ 127, Graf Zepplein.
The Americans began by trying to purchase airships overseas. Two examples proved disastrous. Building a new industry, the US Navy built a copy of a Zeppelin and christened her, USS Shenandoah, the ZR-1. America's first rigid airship overcame teething problems and taught the Navy a great deal before her spectacular break-up over Ohio in 1925. The US Army built its own semi-rigid, the RS-1.
Purchased as war reparations, the LZ-126, USS Los Angeles, became the most successful American airship of all. The ZR-3 served as an aeronautic testbed, observatory, naval scout, and flying airplane carrier.
