Loitering munitions
Loitering munitions have emerged as one of the technologies disrupters be it the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia or the ongoing Russia Ukraine war.
The Indian army has also significantly boosted its loitering munitions stockpile and continues to acquire more of them. There are five different types of loitering munitions which are either in service or in process of induction with Indian Army which are: Nagastra by EEL, Warmate by WB Electronics, Skystriker by Elbit system, Trinetra by Z Motion and ALS 50 by TASL.

PALM-400 under trial by Indian Army
Recently, one Loitering munition came into light as India army has commenced its trials. The system is called PALM 400 – the acronym for “precision attack loitering system”. The system is being tested against the Indian Army tender to procure 10 sets of Aerial Targeting Systems (Extended Range) along with 120 Loiter Munitions under Buy (Indian) Category through Fast Track Procedure under Emergency Procurement process. The tender was released in November 2022.
As per latest reports from Business Standard, over the coming week, the army will conduct tests in Pokhran of “aerial targeting system” for the artillery directorate. In mid-February, another PALM RPV passed a grueling set of trials in the extreme altitudes of Sikkim. There, the RPV was fired from an altitude of 18,000 feet and, after loitering at 19,500 feet, fired a thermobaric warhead that struck a target 8 kilometers away.
Trials conducted so far have determined that the PALM 400’s design allows for exceptional manoeuvrability and has a mid-air abort capability that allows automatic re-entry into loitering mode, re-engagement, or return to the recovery area using a parachute.
In trials, the system has demonstrated an ability to stealthily loiter above a target, gather intelligence and strike instantly at time-sensitive threats. The PALM 400 is also effective against strategic enemy targets with its customizable warhead designed to handle different types of targets.
Technical Specifications of PALM-400
PALM-400 is a long-range precision strike loitering munition. It is an all-electric precision Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) guided, man-in-the-loop Loitering Munition system that can locate, track and strike static and moving targets with high accuracy and surprise. With these precision strike capabilities, a large multi-purpose warhead and extended endurance PALM system is extremely lethal and has been proven effective against a wide variety of targets. The loitering munition weighs around 50 kg, with war head of 10kg, endurance of 120 min and range in excess of 120 km. The larger range gives it capability to strike targets deep inside the enemy territory. It can be launched via various method such as Rail, Single/Multi-Canister.
PALM-400 by Avision
In February 2020, the Israeli firm UVision announced a joint venture with the Indian Aditya Precitech. This JV is called Avision which will be engaged in the design, manufacture, sales, maintenance, support, upgrading, and lifecycle management of Loitering Munitions Systems in India. The company will especially focus on systems already in service and combat-proven under the brand PALM (Precision Attack Loitering Munition) Hero Systems. The PALM-400 under trial by Indian Army is one of the offerings of UVision.
