This is the first time I’ve ever tried to remove these needle roller bearings on a classic mini and I knew I was in for a challenge. I’ve seen a number of very good YouTube videos on this subject, using different techniques but I thought I’d make a video that shows my attempts along the way at removing these.
I bought the special tool kit for removing these types of bearings at a cost of £28. Worth the expense I thought, even though I’m going to end up with another specialised tool kit in my garage that I may never use again. Unfortunately, I couldn’t buy just the one tool, I could only buy a full kit. I hadn’t realised that they are quite so critical on size. The ideal size I needed was 19mm but this kit came with 17mm, which wouldn’t open up enough and 20mm which was slightly too big. I had to find a way to get around this problem, as can be seen in the video.
I used three different ways to attempt to get these bearings out, the first and official way proved to be useless, so I had to think again.
There are videos available where people have used bolts welded to the bearing. I don’t have a MIG welder so I had to find found a different method. I’d be interested to hear any other ways of getting these bearings out.
