THE EVENING STARTED WITH EXCITEMENT IN SARAH PALIN'S HOMETOWN AS HER FRIENDS AND FAMILY HELD ELECTION NIGHT PARTIES ALL OVER TOWN. BUT THE MOOD QUICKLY CHANGED AS THE RETURNS FROM THE LOWER 48 BEGAN TO COME IN.

OPTIMISTIC ALASKANS TRIED TO LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE.
Kristan Cole, Palin's Friend, says: "We still win because she still comes home and she's still our Governor."
THE SCENE WAS THE SAME AT LARGER PUBLIC GATHERINGS IN WASILLA AND ANCHORAGE WHERE CAMPAIGN OFFICIALS DEFENDED JOHN McCAIN'S CHOICE FOR RUNNING MATE.
David Boyle, McCain-Palin Alaska Campaign Manager, says: "She did not hurt the ticket. She really energized the ticket and got Senator McCain energized as well."
Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, (R) Alaska, says: "If the rest of the nation knew her like we know her, landslide tonight for McCain-Palin."
Haven Daley, The Associated Press, says: "Although Palin's supporters say they'll be glad to have the Governor back to finish her term, they say you haven't heard the last of Palin on the national stage."
Linda Jo Klapperich, Palin Supporter, says: "A lot of people can relate to her, being a Mom, brand new baby. She exemplifies what a lot of American people are looking for."
EXPECT TO SEE MORE BUTTONS LIKE THESE (Palin in '12) IN THE YEARS TO COME. HAVEN DALEY, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, WASILLA, ALASKA.
