In this video, we introduce you to Anne Askew; the Tudor woman who’s bravery under unimaginable torture saved the life of Henry VIIIs sixth wife, Queen Catherine Parr.
Anne married young and endured years of domestic violence before she was thrown out of the marital home by her evil husband. So, Anne travelled to London to request a divorce directly from the head of the Church of England, Henry VIII. Whilst in London, Anne began preaching and connected with some powerful Protestants, including the ladies in waiting to the Queen.
In the 1540s, Henry VIII’s court was filled with powerful Catholics who were desperate to eliminate the pesky Protestants from his kingdom. The highest profile Protestant in the land was Queen Catherine Parr; and she was known to have connections with the Protestant preacher, Anne Askew.
The bounty on Queen Catherine’s head was high. She had to be eliminated. The solution sounded simple enough; torture Anne until she surrendered the evidence required to implicate the Queen of heresy.
However, Anne’s interrogators soon realised that Anne was a formidable woman and securing information against the Queen was going to be a super difficult task...
