Alpine currant (Ribes alpinum) is a member of the Grossulariaceae family.
Appearance: It is a multi-form bush that grows up to about two and a half meters in height, without thorns. The main stems are slender with brown bark, and the branches have gray bark and divide into brownish-yellow twigs, often hanging down. The leaves are arranged spirally, deeply three or five-lobed, with pointed or blunt lobes, heavily serrated, bare or sparsely hairy, especially on the upper side, shiny lower side of leaves, and glandularly hairy leaf stalks, half the length of the leaf blade. The flower clusters are always upright, and the greenish-yellow flowers usually hang down on both sides. The lanceolate bracts are glandularly hairy, longer than the stalks and flowers. The male flowers are gathered in ten to thirty flower clusters, with a flat saucer-shaped corolla tube, and five oval to broadly elliptical sepals. The petals and stamens are short. The female flowers are gathered in two to five flower clusters, with small sepals, steeply upright stamens, and a large and bare ovary.
Habitat: This species is scattered in sunny forests, shrubby slopes, and rocky places, but also in more humid deciduous forests. It mainly grows in the mountains, particularly in subalpine zones and on limestone soils.
Distribution: This species is distributed throughout almost all of Europe, but only in the mountains in the southern part of the continent.
Flowering period: Alpine currant blooms from April to June.
