STORYLINE:
Scores of angry students and other demonstrators invaded one of Paris' most elite schools on Monday and clashed with police in a new escalation of protests against the government's controversial youth jobs plan.
About 200 high school and university students swarmed into the College de France, one of France's most elite research and teaching institutions dating to 1530, to press their demand that the prime minister withdraw a plan they fear will hurt job security.
The youths hurled stones and metal barricades at riot police, who used tear gas to try to disperse the chanting crowd.
Dozens of students holed up inside, while others faced down police on the street.
The students were also demanding that the government reopen Sorbonne University, where riot police forcibly evicted hundreds of students staging a sit-in in a pre-dawn raid on Saturday.
Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has vowed to stick with the new labour law that has fanned broad protests, pleading for opponents to accept the changes to a job market saddled with double-digit unemployment rates among the young.
The law makes it easier for companies to fire workers under 26 during the first two years of employment - a measure of flexibility the government hopes will spur employers to hire young people, knowing they will be able to get rid of them if they have to.
Critics say it would offer younger workers less job security than older colleagues and undermine France's generous labour protections. The measure is to take effect in April.
