Bula was a Lappet-faced vulture who was a resident vulture at Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in South Africa.
To become an animal ambassador for the other vultures at Moholoholo, he had to be taught to fly to the arm of his keeper, John. But vultures are not easy bird to train. Plus Bula was a huge heavy bird with a very nasty beak. On top of that he had a vicious set of talons and attitude to match.
Watch the fear and fun as John puts Bula through his training session..! This is not an exercise for the faint hearted!
Moholoholo conducts visitor day tours of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, or you can stay at Forest Camp, Mountain View, or Ya Mati accommodation. They also run educational courses for nature enthusiasts or those wanting to follow a career in conservation. But it was the Student Programme for volunteers that we enjoyed the most.

FUN FACTS ABOUT LAPPET-FACED VULTURES
The number of vultures living in the wild has decreased due to humans. Habitat destruction, hunting, and especially the use of poisons have led the IUCN to list the lappet-faced vulture as endangered.
They are thought to be the most powerful vulture in the world. Their weight range is from 4-9 kg, making them the second heaviest bird able to fly in Africa, with an impressive wing span of up to 3m.
Like many long-necked vulture species, it has a bald head, used to help regulate its body temperature as well as to keep its head clean whilst burying deep into a carcass when eating. And they can eat up to a phenomenal 1.5kg of meat in one sitting.
