What would happen if the largest known asteroid hit the Earth?

It would enter our atmosphere at 72,000 kilometres per hour.
Vesta is over 500 kilometres in diameter. Remember, the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was only about 10 kilometres wide. After the collision, destruction equivalent to billions of atomic bombs will occur, and dust and ash will rain down on most of the Earth along with fire. Sunlight would not be able to reach the Earth's surface. This means that everything on Earth will freeze for years.
In short, we will first burn and then freeze.
