When evaluating in the categories of efficiency in lure presentation and percentage of time spent in the “strike zone” there is perhaps no better musky fishing tactic other than trolling! Whether you like to do it with oars or by the power of an outboard motor, trolling is by and far one of the most deadly methods to produce not just numbers of muskies, but BIG ones too!
Trolling allows you to present your lure in the strike zone for a prolonged period of time and it also enables you to cover a vast amount of structure very quickly. It is no secret that statistically speaking, the best time to bag a true trophy muskellunge of over 30 pounds is during the late-fall period but the problem for many anglers is the weather.
Late-October and November bring on some of the most brutal and nasty wind, sleet and snow conditions so casting becomes almost impossible! And this is challenging not just from a comfort perspective, but also from the equipment performance side of things too. Freezing line and level-winds can stop your musky hunt right in its tracks!
Trolling practically eliminates all of these challenges because it allows you to fish in hardcore weather gear so you can stay warm and it also decreases equipment failure because you are not casting and soaking your reels and rods in water that will freeze. All of these benefits in addition to the before mentioned efficiency of lure presentation make trolling for muskies an art form that you must look into if you are serious about taking your game to the next level!
In this video my good friend and long time musky hunting partner Mike Richardson head out on a musky fishing trip only to struggle with the shallow-water casting bite. We could not turn a musky on traditional casting presentations or even with live bait on our best spots. So what did we do to salvage our trip? We turned to motor trolling deep breaklines and not 45 minutes into our trolling endeavor and Mike was hoisting a beautiful northern Wisconsin beast from the net!
