Carol of the Bells is a Christmas song, which is an adaptation of the Ukrainian folk song "Shchedryk", which gained fame in the arrangement of the Ukrainian composer Nikolai Leontovich.
The first performance brought great success to the composer. The name of Leontovich became known both in musical circles and among the general public.
"Shchedryk" (from Ukrainian "Bountiful Evening") is a Ukrainian folk's song and tells a story of a swallow flying into a household to sing of wealth that will come with the following spring.

On October 5, 1921, Shchedryk was first performed in the United States of America at a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York. The song became so popular that in 1936 Peter Wilhousky, who worked for NBC radio, penned the English version of the words "Shchedryk". The song reminded Vilkhovsky of a chime, and he recorded this image in his poems. Later, the song became entrenched in the musical culture of the West under the name "Carol of the Bells". To this day, American choirs, both professional and amateur, sing this piece like a Christmas carol.
"Carol of the Bells" has been recorded in over 150 versions and reworkings for a variety of vocal and instrumental compositions.
