Operation Fracture Jaw was a top-secret U.S. military contingency plan in which General William C. Westmoreland sought to ensure that nuclear weapons would be available for use in the Vietnam War. The plan included moving nuclear weapons into South Vietnam so that they could be used on short notice against North Vietnamese troops. In spite of moves towards activating the plan, the project was abandoned in February 1968 when it was discovered by the White House.
The UH-1 (dubbed the 'huey') was a utility military helicopter that was heavily used during the Vietnam War. First introduced in 1959, the UH-1 was used for a variety of purposes, including ground attacks, armed escorts, medevacs and troop deployment. The chopper would be outfitted with various armaments, depending on the nature of its use. This could include rocket launchers, grenade launchers, and machine guns. Hueys configured for troop transport were equipped with door gunners armed with an M134 minigun, allowing for devastating air support against soft ground targets. The UH-1 is still in use by several nations.
During the Vietnam War, the city of Da Nang was used by the South Vietnamese and United States Air Forces as a major air base. The base became one of the world's busiest aircraft hubs during the war. After the US withdrawal from the conflict, Da Nang fell to the communist forces in March 1975.
