Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon lies on the border of Iceland’s largest national park, Vatnajökull, named after the glacier that dominates this southeastern landscape. Widely referred to as the “Crown Jewel of Iceland” due to its incredible aesthetic quality and unique surrounding nature, Jökulsárlón is one of the most popular visitor destinations in the country.
Guests to the lagoon will look upon the impressive glacier tongue, Breiðamerkurjökull (itself, originating from Vatnajökull), from which enormous icebergs break away before finally coming to float on the water’s still surface. This creates an amazingly serene ambience, interrupted only by the sound of these gentle ice giants grinding into each other.
Whilst at the lagoon, visitors also have the chance to partake in a boat ride, allowing them to get up close and personal with the icebergs in order to achieve some incredible snapshots. If you’re lucky, you might also see some of the resident seals that call Jökulsárlón home.
Only five minutes from the lagoon, guests can also visit Diamond Beach, a stretch of shoreline where the lagoon’s icebergs finally escape into the open Atlantic Ocean. Diamond Beach is one of Iceland’s famous black sand beaches, meaning photographers and nature lovers can relish in the stark contrasts made between the clear white ice and the jet black pebbles.
