There are several words in Japanese that are difficult to translate into English, and among them, "izakaya" is one that’s especially difficult. It is a generally inexpensive place for anyone to enjoy alcoholic drinks and food, but it is not a restaurant or a bar.
How was the unique Izakaya born in Japan? Izakaya first appeared in the middle of the Edo period (1603~1868). Originally, alcohol was bought at liquor stores and brought home to drink. However, the long period of peace led people to drink alcohol bought at liquor stores directly at the stores while talking with the clerks and other customers. So the stores started to prepare chairs and provide some food for the guests, and this is how the Izakaya was born. Staying and drinking in a liquor store, hence the name izakaya.
