CAN THE FEEDBACK BE ALWAYS POSITIVE?
Yes!
Mayan is a Marketing Head for Southeast Asia. In my last coaching session, he expressed that his #feedback to the team is not received well though he prepares for this in advance. I asked him to share an example.
Mayan: Like, I told them how their customer service was less effective in the pandemic.
Me: How can this be said with what worked well? And what can be better?
Mayan: Umm…I can tell them that their communication quality has been good. And they can speed up resolution within the promised time.
Me: How good would your team feel with this feedforward?
Mayan: They will feel good and get clear direction.
A Gallup poll indicated that ONLY 26% of employees felt that feedback improves their professional performance. The reasons:
• Puts receiver in emotional stress
• Focuses primarily on ratings, not on development
• Reinforces negative behaviors
#Feedforward is productive in helping people learn to be “right” than proving they were “wrong.” The basics of feedforward are:
• Reinforce what is working
• Leader as a coach, don’t criticize
• Provide ideas for “next time.”
Feedforward shifts the focus from ‘criticism of past performance’ to ‘direction for future.’ That may not sound like a big difference, but it feels completely different to the person on the receiving end. Enjoy the video on Feedforward under ‘Leadership Coaching Series.’
