I believe the most effective half guard is the knee shield because it is the strongest frame there is. In playing guard frames keep your opponent from progressing forward to pin you. Usually we use the space from frames to free our hips to move into open space and recover guard and/or a more advantageous position. The knee shield half guard can lead to sweeps and even submission opportunities.
The thing about all frames is they require pressure/connection to work. So instead of pressing into the knee shield, back your pressure away slow enough to draw their knee/shin away from their body until it begins to collapse. Use your hips to smash their knees together (and they will point away), so you can rotate around to their back for a relatively easy guard pass.
