Although replacing the coolant reservoir is a relatively simple task on a BMW E36, it is extremely important. My brother blew a head gasket on the highway when his expansion tank cracked.
These coolant reservoirs are made of plastic and are known to develop leaks after 50,000 or so miles. For that reason I recommend that you replace the reservoir every 50,000 miles or so.
Luckily there are only two hoses to disconnect, a plastic tab and a sensor to disconnect.
