Rescue operations are currently underway following a partial collapse of an apartment building in Davenport, Iowa on Sunday (May 28).
Fire crews successfully rescued seven people, guiding over a dozen others to safety, according to Davenport Fire Chief Michael Carlsten. Emergency responders were quick to treat injuries at the scene, although the exact number of individuals affected has not been released.
The collapse primarily impacted the rear section of the six-story apartment complex, causing it to separate from the rest of the building. The upper floors house apartments while the ground level accommodates various businesses. Chief Carlsten also noted the discovery of a gas leak and extensive water damage throughout the structure.
As search and rescue efforts continue, authorities remain concerned about the stability of the building, with secondary collapses occurring while responders were on-site.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown at this time.
Due to the ongoing emergency, the Davenport Police Department has advised citizens to avoid downtown until further notice.
