Dr. Shaun Patel, a cosmetic dermatologist and expert in facial aesthetics answers the question, "What lip filler is right for me?". In this video, Dr. Patel discusses the different lip filler treatment options including Juvederm, Volbella, Restylane Silk, and Restylane and when he used each of these fillers.
Volbella and Restylane Silk are soft hyaluronic acid based gel fillers that are great for defining the lips. Dr. Patel prefers Volbella, which is made by Allergan, over Restylane Silk which is manufactured by Galderma, because Volbella causes less swelling and last longer (up to a year) then Restylane Silk.
When it comes to lip augmentation or adding more volume to the lips, Dr. Patel prefers to use either Juvederm Ultra or Restylane.
It is important to determine during the initial cosmetic evaluation whether a patient needs better lip definition or more volume. Based on this assessment, the correct filler can be selected.
While Dr. Patel prefers a cannula for injection of filler in other parts of the face, he still uses needle for lip filler injection because it provides him with better control.
Perioral lines such as "smokers lines", "lipstick lines" and vertical lip lines can be treated with soft gel fillers such as Volbella and Restylane Silk during lip filler treatment. Often times, Dr. Patel will also combine filler treatment with Botox injection around the mouth. A small amount of Botox injected into the orbicularis oris, which is the muscle around the mouth, will help soften perioral lines and evert the lips.
