The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Tarana was composed in 1955 by Ishtiaq Mohammad Khan, a university student. The song is based on an abridged version of the 1933 poem "Narz-e-Aligarh" by poet and university student Majaz.

* INSPIRATION: The VC's address to final year students inspired Khan to create something long-lasting for the university.
* TUNE: Khan created the tune in the last week of September, 1954.
* FIRST PERFORMANCE: The song was first performed on October 17, 1954 at Strachey Hall.
* REACTION: The VC was impressed and the President of the Union, Ahmad Saeed, apologized to Khan for his earlier stand.
* TRANSLATION: In 2014, Dr Sami Rafiq, an English professor at AMU, translated the tarana into English for her book Aahung.
