This service focuses on the Last Supper, the last meal Jesus shared with his disciples. This is the origin of the Holy Communion, where Jesus shared bread and wine, and said that this was his body and blood, and that whenever Christians meet together, they should do this to remember him. Following this service, the consecrated wafers are taken in procession to St Mary’s Aisle, which has been decorated to signify the Garden of Gethsemane, and here we will pray, quietly, until midnight, when Jesus was arrested and taken to trial. We take the garden down, and leave the cathedral in darkness, emulating Jesus’s betrayal. For many people this is the most moving service of Holy Week, because it reveals how close friends can abandon the one they love, and that is a difficult message for us all to hear.
