I set my self a challenge of creating a primitive fire ,making fire with a bow drill from scratch using only natural materials , no man made items such as paracord or a knife.

I broke of a sharp piece of flint to make a very primitive cutting tool, which i was able to scratch the wood away to make the bow drill set.
I made some cord from willow bark by revers rapping the inner park fibres this made a very strong and robust cordage.
Even though the willow cord was strong, its not as strong as paracord so i used the Egyptian method of rapping the cord around the spindle several times to stop the cord wearing thin and breaking
The set was made from pine ( that i believe to be yellow pine ) the pine was in a very dry condition and a perfect condition for making a bow drill fire set from
I used a stone with a whole in as the bearing block.

It was a project that i worked on over a few days due to time i couldn't make it all in one day.
in the video it looks like a short process but this is not, defiantly not something you would want to do in a survival situation. What would normally take a few seconds took hours with out the correct tools. This is a good bushcraft challenge to really test your bushcraft skill, from flint knapping, cordage making, selection of material and making sure everything is as close to perfect a possible before starting. This type of challenge really emphasises the importance of carrying a basic kit with you with a means of lighting fire like a ferro rod or a lighter , and to make sure you have a knife and cord with you. Yes you can make do with out but it isn't easy. and realies on you being able to find the right materials
