South Africa has the world's second-largest titanium-bearing resources in the world, after Australia, but it does not produce any metal. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research's two-year-old Titanium Centre of Competence is in a close, global race to commercialise a more cost-effective method of producing titanium metal.
