Five jobseekers, duped by a syndicate promising high-paying jobs in Thailand, have been rescued and brought back to Malaysia on Sunday, February 19.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department director Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hassan said the victims, four men and a woman, aged between 20 and 40, have been working at call centres in the country.
He said at least two from the group were rescued by the Royal Thai Police and the rest managed to escape from the syndicate and made their way to the Malaysian Embassy.
As of now, Abdul Jalil said there were 14 more Malaysian victims stranded, believed to be harboured by the same syndicate.
Abdul Jalil said following a meeting with Thai officials, they believed that one of the syndicate's masterminds could be based in Malaysia.
So far, two local job agencies are being investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrant Act 2007, he said.
