Remdesivir, brand name Veklury is the first antiviral medication being approved for the treatment of COVID 19. It is the first antiviral being discovered that could stop the replication of coronavirus.

Remdesivir, also known as GS-5734; brand name Veklury is an
antiviral medication developed by the biopharmaceutical
company Gilead sciences. It is originally developed to treat
hepatitis C and was tested against Ebola virus and Marburg
virus but was ineffective.
However, the great news now is, it has shown to reduce the
time of recovery and hospitalisation for the novel coronavirus
Covid 19.

Remdesivir currently being used to treat moderate to severe
cases of the Covid- 19 patients.

Mode of action of Remdesivir

Covid 19 virus replicates by copying their genetic material
using an enzyme as a catalyst called RNA-dependant RNA
polymerase also known as a RNA replicase.
Remdesivir is an inhibitor of the RNA replicase thus preventing genetic material being copied thus stop the replication of the virus.

What are the side effects of Remdesivir?

•Increased liver enzyme levels which may indicate liver
damage
•nausea and vomiting - Nausea and vomiting are typical
side effects antiviral medication.

Remdesivir Dosages:
An initial one-time dose of 200mg, Followed by 100mg per day for
10 days

DRUG INTERACTIONS
• Clarithromycin
• Rifampin

Pregnancy
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan or become pregnant, it
is unknown if Remdesivir will affect the fetus. In rats and monkeys,
RDV affected kidney development in fetuses.

Breastfeeding
It is unknown if remdesivir (RDV) passes into breast milk . Consult
your doctor before breastfeeding .
